Sakkari stunned by Chinese outsider

Third seed Maria Sakkari fell 3-6,7-5, 7-5 victim to unfancied Chinese Wang Xiyu on Wednesday to make a second-round exit from the US Open.

The Greek who reached the semi-finals here a year ago, struggled for two and three-quarter hours with the No. 75 who won the third Grand Slam match of her career after Australia in January.

Sakkari struck 22 unforced errors as she followed compatriot Stefanos Tsitsipas out the door at Flushing Meadows, ending Greek participation at this edition.

The 21-year-old Wang sent over a dozen aces and broke the Sakkari serve six times from 11 chances.
