Gael Monfils was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros on Wednesday after injuring his wrist during a marathon, five-set win a day earlier.
The popular Frenchman, 36, who has played only five ATP-level matches this season, found his comeback derailed at his home major.
“There’s a problem with my wrist that I cannot solve,: Monfils said.
“I felt it during the match. Unfortunately the doctor said it’s not good to play with that type of injury.”
The pullout gives sixth seed Holger Rune a walkover into the fourth round.
