“Cheers to me,” says Washington winner Kyrgios

Proud ATP Washington winner Nick Kyrgios could not help but pat himself on the back after his second title at the 500-level event in three years at the weekend.

The Aussie tennis outlaw who has cleaned up his act and reaped the rewards with a Wimbledon final last month, added to the mounting momentum by claiming his first trophy since winning the same title in the US capital in 2019.

With his ranking back to 37th after standing 63rd last week, the 27-year-old is on track for a possible US Open seeding.

“I’ve reinvented myself, I’m making history and I am proud of it,” he said after defeating Japan’s Yoshihiti Nishioka in straight sets.

“If Wimbledon had distributed points, I would be close to the top-10.”

Kyrgios added: “I’m very proud of myself and my team. It’s been an incredible week, in which I was able to pull off very tight matches.

“I used the confidence gained at Wimbledon to keep myself at the highest level.”

Kyrgios said it’s all down to his determination: “I’m reaping the fruits sown in recent months, in which

“I’ve trained very hard. I’ve (developed) the will to do everything as well as possible.

“Right now I know I’m one of the best players this year.”
