Revitalised Kyrgios doubles up on Washington trophies

Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios won the Washington ATP title for the second time on Sunday as the Australian defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s final.

The Australian who has rediscovered his love for tennis over the past half year, repeated his trophy triumph in the US capital from 2019.

He and American mate Jack Sock also lifted the doubles crown 7-5, 6-4 over Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek to cap a perfect week as the US Open run-up period gets serious.

Kyrgios collected the seventh title of his career in heat and humidity and now heads to next week’s Montreal Masters with a jolt of confidence after his All England Club final against Novak Djokovic last month.

He saved each of the 10 break points he faced off his Japanese opponent’s racquet.

“It’s just very emotional for me,” the Aussie said. “To see where I was at last year to now, it’s just an incredible transformation.

“I just came out with great energy. I knew that I had experience on my side today. I love this court, I’ve played so many good matches here, so I’m just really happy with myself.”

The thoughtful player added: “I’ve been in some really dark places. Just to be able to turn it around.

“There are so many people who have helped me get there, but myself, I’ve shown some serious strength to just continue and persevere and get through all those times and be able to still perform and win tournaments like this one.”

Kyrgios capped off his 11th victory in a dozen matches and will advance to 37th in the rankings on Monday.
