DAY 1 TALKING POINTS

  • World No. 1 and three-time champion Novak Djokovic puts his perfect record in 2020 on the line against Damir
Dzumhur on opening night at the US Open. On Saturday, Djokovic beat Milos Raonic inside Louis Armstrong
Stadium to win the Western & Southern Open, tying Rafael Nadal with a record 35th ATP Masters 1000 title.
  • Djokovic has won all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments twice. No other player has swept all nine titles once.
  • In the first men’s match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, No. 5 seed Alexander Zverev meets 2017 runner-up Kevin Anderson. The 6-foot-8 South African is one of seven former Grand Slam finalists in the 2020 US Open field.
  • Thirteen of the 21 Americans in the field will play on Monday, headlined by current No. 1 American John Isner’s meeting with ex-No. 1 American Steve Johnson. World No. 35 Reilly Opelka, the top-ranked unseeded player in the draw, challenges No. 7 seed David Goffin. Seven of the eight wild cards, all Americans, are also in action.
  • Four of the wild cards will make their respective Grand Slam main draw debuts on Monday: 19-year-old Brandon Nakashima, 20-year-old Sebastian Korda, 22-year-old Ulises Blanch and 23-year-old Maxime Cressy.
