Swiatek swamps Fernandez to spoil Canadian’s Dubai debut

Iga Swiatek spoiled the Dubai debut week of Leylah Fernandez on Tuesday as she thrashed the outclassed Canadian 6-1, 6-1 to easily reach the WTA third round.

The Polish top seed and world No. 1 continued the devastating form which took her to the Doha trophy on Saturday, her first of the season after a surprise fourth-round exit last month in Melbourne..

Swiatek won her 10th match of the season in 73 minutes.

2021 US Open finalist Fernandez was the second Canadian to fall in as many days after Bianca Andreescu lost on Monday to Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Swiatek sent over five aces and broke Fernandez six times in the rout.

“It was tougher out there than the score looked,” the winner said. “In the second set she had some great points.eh e

“I didn’t have much time to get used to the court, but I’m happy I played solid tennis.

I take power from being No. 1.”
