Jannik Sinner is gaining ground on Carlos Alcaraz as the race for world No. 1 tightens after the Spaniard’s shock weekend exit at the Miami Masters.
While the top-ranked Spaniard was flying him after losing to Sebastian Korda in the Miami Masters third round, hotel rival Sinner was celebrating another win – and a record – at the Florida venue.
The italian established the longest win streak of sets at the Masters level as he won his 26th in a row as part of a 6-1, 6-4 result over Corentin Moutet which put him into the fourth round.
With no points to defend at the tournament, Sinner is closing the gap on what appears to be a fatigued Alcaraz, now focusing on a quick turnaround for the clay season which begins in early April at Monte Carlo.
Sinner’s streak continues as he chases a title pair at the Sunshine Double events in the US after winning the Indian Wells title this month.
“I am very happy, this sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we’ll see what is coming in the next round,” Sinner said.
The Italian has not lost a set at a Masters tournament since last November indoors in Paris. The last to win Indian Wells and Miami in the same season was Roger Federer in 2017.
Sinner advanced past Moutet with 23 winners to set up a meeting with Alex Michelsen.
