Shy and retiring Iga Swiatek made a personal breakthrough on the eve of the US Open, with the world No. 1 finally speaking one-on-one with her idol Serena Williams.
“So, I finally found the courage today and this happened,” the Pole posted on social media with a picture of herself and the 23-time Grand Slam champion set to retire after the Open.
“Congratulations on your amazing journey and legendary career Serena. Huge respect for everything that you have done for our sport and women’s sport.”
Swiatek let slip this month in Cincinnati that she had never had a locker room convo with Williams, woh admittedly travels with an imposing and intimidating entourage as a social media figure and athlete.
The 21-year-old said at the time that she would make an effort to speak with the American.
The big moment finally happened and was duly documented.
