Rune rolls Thiem to start Paris defence

Holger Rune won his seventh match without a loss at the Paris Masters as the danish young gun returned to the scene of his biggest career triumph.

The defending champion started his defense of the 2022 title by dispatching Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-2 in 91 minutes.

Rune ended a four-match loss streak at the Masters 1000 level; his last victory in the series came six months ago in Rome before losses in Toronto, Cincinnati and Shanghai.

“it is so great to step out on this court; this is my favourite court in tennis. It’s a special feeling to play here. It suits my game very well.

“First matches are ever easy,” Rune said after finishing with 25 winners and 18 unforced errors against the former US open champion who is ranked 108th after two seasons of injury recovery.

“We all know how dangerous Dominic is.”
