Roland Garros Day Eight – Who plays Who

Rafael Nadal faces world No. 213 Sebastian Korda while US Open champion Dominic Thiem meets Hugo Gaston, ranked at 239.

“I named my cat Rafa after him,” Seb Korda said. “That says a lot about how much I love the guy.”

Dad Petr Korda won the Australian Open in 1998. His mother Regina Rajchrtova is a former top 30, while sisters Nelly and Jessica are world No. two and 22 on the LPGA golf rankings.

Gaston, who beat Stan Wawrinka in the previous round, is the only French player left in the men’s tournament from the 18 who started.

If Nadal defeats Korda, he will face either German sixth seed Alexander Zverev or 19-year-old Jannik Sinner in the quarters.

Another match to watch is the clash between Diego Schwartzman and Lorenzo Song.

The Argentine stunned Nadal in Rome 10 days ago.

Top seed and 2018 champion Simona Halep takes on 19-year-old Iga Swiatek of Poland.

Halep dropped just one game when they met a year ago.

Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan takes on Dutch fifth seed Kiki Bertens, third-seed Elina Svitolina meets France’s Caroline Garcia and Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska faces Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.
