Popyrin shocks Goffin in upset of the day

Australia’s Alex Popyrin produced one of the upset of the day at the Australian Open, stunning 13th seed David Goffin 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-3.

The Sydneysider saved four match points on his way to his face set victory as fans returned courtside to cheer him on.

“I was near the brink of losing so coming back from match points, it really gives you confidence for the upcoming rounds,” Popyrin said.

“The way I played was really pleasing to me. All the preseason work I did – physically and on my game – it paid off today.

“I managed to stay in it, I managed to dig deep and I came out on top.”

Popyrin will play South African Lloyd Harris next on Thursday.
