Optimistic Murray ready for revival in Melbourne

Two days of success at the Kooyong Classic has Andy Murray dreaming of past glory as the five-time finalist prepares for his 15th edition at Melbourne Park.

The 35-year-old with three Grand Slam titles wrapped up his second exhibition match win on Thursday, beating Aussie mate Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-3.

After exiting Melbourne Park in the second round a year ago, Murray is working towards a longer stay at the Grand Slam where he is a nearly-man

“I’m playing the tennis I need to try and be successful. The courts require aggressive tennis; the balls shoot through.

“I like the conditions here, I’m hitting the ball well and moving well. When I do that my tennis tends to be good.

“I’ll focus the next couple of days on maintaining and hopefully having a good run (at the Open).”

Murray takes heart from his fourth-round loss last autumn in the New York fourth sets to Matteo Berrettini. The No. 49 was drawn into a repeat of that match for his Melbourne start next week.

“Since the US Open (fourth round) I’ve put in a lot of work. “If I can get through a few rounds I don’t see why I can’t do well.”

Murray faces a tough opener in Melbourne next week, drawn to play Italian Matteo Berrettini in round one.
