Murray misery after another disheartening defeat

Andy Murray suffered his fourth loss this season without a match win as the walls start to close in on the former No. 1 who cannot seem to get traction in 2024.

Murray went down in the first round at the ATP Marseille 250 event, losing 7-5, 6-4 to Czech Tomas Machac in 97 minutes.

The 23-year-old winner could not have been prouder of his accomplishment against the three-time Grand Slam winner from Scotland.

“It’s special to share the court with such a great player, such a legend,” No. 66 Machac said.

“I’m super happy that I could play against him and that I won today is just a bonus.”

After more than half a decade of hip problems and ensuing surgeries and a fightback which seems to have stalled, confidence for the 36-year-old Murray is at a low ebb.

He has lost all four matches he has played this season and last earned a win in Basel last October 23 in the first round.

Machac broke the veteran three times to advance into a meeting with Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
