More than a breeze for Muguruza in Chicago

Garbine Muguruza and Ons Jabeur were the big winners in the second round of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic on Tuesday.

In windy conditions Muguruza won 6-4 6-4 over 21-year-old American Ann Li and No. 6 seed Jabeur easily saw off Su-Wei Hseih 6-1, 6-0 in just 46 minutes.

“It was a difficult match just because (Chicago) is a windy city,” Muguruza said.

“Just controlling the mindset and not getting very frustrated because it´s difficult. With 6-4, 6-4, it was very tight. I think the match was very equal due to the circumstances, but I´m happy that I stayed calm in the 5-4, serving for each set, and I managed to close them out.”

No.7 seed Elise Mertens also made quick work of Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Anett Kontaveit blew away Madison Brengle of the US 6-4, 6-3 after a marathon journey from Ostrava.

Victoria Azarenka cruised past Zhang Shuai in just 61 minutes, 6-2, 6-1.

“I used to spend a bit of time in Chicago. One of the families I lived with when I was young, he was playing for the Chicago Blackhawks… so it felt special coming back here and knowing the support is here,” Azarenka said after the match.
