Medvedev rediscovering his hardcourt comfort zone

US Open champion Daniel Medvedev continued to get comfortable again on hardcourt as the top seed defeated Ricardas Berankis 6-2, 6-2 at the ATP event in Los cabos.

The Mexican win came at the first hardcourt event for Medvedev since March; he was banned from playing Wimbledon due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It was very different (from my first round) ,” Medvedev said. “My opponent today played very different, much more aggressive.

“Against that type of player sometimes you don’t have much to do. Just try to serve well, bringing the balls back in the court.

“That’s what I managed to do. He missed a little but too much today and that was enough.”

Medvedev is seeking his first title of the season after achieving his 250th career match win this week in the first round,

He is duelling in the ranking points table with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic for  year-end world No. 1 honours as well..

“I like playing on hard courts. I’m playing great here so far,” the winner said. “The further you go, the tougher the matches, the tougher the opponents, (there is)  more pressure.

“But that’s what we like and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
