It’s over for Alcaraz: Spaniard out of ATP Finals

Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday pulled the plug on his 2022 season, with the teenaged world No. 1 withdrawing from the ATP Finals.

The Spaniard who was unable to finish a Paris Masters quarter-final due to an abdominal muscle injury, said his campaign is over early.

The 19-year-old has put his top ATP ranking at risk, with elder rivals Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsisipas now in position to possibly seize the top spot.

The eight-man Finals start in Turin in eight days.

“It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events,” Alcaraz posted on social media. “All I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery.”

Alcaraz, winner of five titles this season including the US Open over Casper Ruud, said doctors have advised him to rest for at least six weeks, also ruling him out of the Iberic-centred Davis Cup this month in Spain.

After my withdrawal yesterday and having been evaluated by my medical team, unfortunately this is the result of my injury:

“An internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks.”
