In-form Badosa blows away young Italian

No.8 seed Paula Badosa cruised past Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan 6-0, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena in an hour and 11 minutes on Wednesday to enter uncharted territory.

She has never reached the third round of the event before.

Badosa, currently on a seven-match winning streak, was dominant against world No. 111 Trevisan, hitting five aces and winning 80 per cent of her first-service points.

Trevisan’s best effort was when at 4-0 in the first set, she pulled back to deuce from double break point down, before Badosa blasted back with a ferocious backhand.

The young Italian stayed in the second set until 2-2 before the Spaniard took control, racing away from that point to seal victory.

“I’m very happy,” Badosa said afterwards.

“Martina is a fighter, she has a really nice story and I really respect players like her. I knew she would fight until the end so I had to stay in every point and I’m really happy I got the win.

“I think I worked very hard last year and there was a key moment. I’m sorry the name I’m going to say right now but beating Ash Barty, the best player in the world, for me was amazing.

“After that moment I thought everything was possible and that I could beat any player.”

Badosa will next face Ukrainian teenager Marta Kostyuk in the third round.

The 19-year-old beat No.32 seed Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain 7-6(5), 6-3 in just under two hours.
