Girlfriend dream denied: Kyrgios pulls from RG as expected

Nick Kyrgios rolled back on his promise to finally return to the French Open as the Australian pulled the plug as expected and withdrew from the clay court major.

The eccentric Australian drawcard’s decision shattered a promise made in 2022 to girlfriend Costeen Hatzi, whom he said wanted him to play so she could visit the French capital for the first time.

“Next year I am going to go to Paris. I’m announcing that now, I’m going to the French Open,” he said nearly a year ago.

“I haven’t played that in four years so I’ll be back next year. My girlfriend just wants to see Paris. I mean, I’ll play the French Open as well.”

But travel plans have now been scrapped as the No. 26 who has not fired a ball in anger on the Tour since last October in Tokyo continues to sit it out week after week.

Kyrgios withdrew from the Australian Open in January on the eve of his opening match, undergoing a medical procedure on his knee.

The confirmed grass court fan is scheduled to start his pre-Wimbledon campaign on the lawns at the ATP Stuttgart tournament June 12. If he follows his 2022 summer schedule he would then travel north to Halle, Germany, for that grass tuneup.
