Italy shocked Austria on day one the ATP Cup, as US Open champion Dominic Thiem went down to Matteo Berrettini 6-2 6-4.
Berrettini’s win levelled the tie after Dennis Novak had given the Austrians a 6-3 6-2 victory over Fabio Fognini.
The Italians had the last laugh with Fognini and Berrettini teaming up in the doubles to take down Thiem and Novak 6-1 6-4.
“I’m really happy for my performance,” Berrettini said.
“Playing for your country is something special.”
