First round defeat for young Brit Jones

Young Brit Francesca Jones’ first Grand Slam appearance ended in defeat as the Australian Open qualifier lost out 6-4, 6-1 to American Shelby Rogers today.

Jones recovered from 3-0 down to level the first set but Rogers woke up to there threat from the British 20-year-old to close out the first set.

Rogers then controlled the second, running out an easy winner against Jones, from Bradford in Yorkshire.

Jones had defied expectations to make the main draw with three good wins in the Doha qualifying tournament despite a medical condition which means she was born with three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on her right foot and four on her left.
