US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez took advantage of fading form from Amanda Anisimova to pin a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 defeat on the American to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Sunday.
The 18th-ranked Canadian took control of the Chatrier showcourt match in the deciding set as her opponent’s errors mounted.
Fernandez benefitted as Anisimova’s frustration mounted in the closing stages.
The No. 28 saved a match point in the ninth game but took victory on a second as the American could not handle a return at her feet.
“It was a very complicated match, but I’m very happy to have won,” the 2019 junior champion here said.
