Confident Murray targets US Open seeding

Andy Murray won a round in Newport and is now looking ahead to a possible seeding at the US Open.

The Scot who disappointingly crashed out in the Wimbledon second round to John Isner, is playing his last event on grass before switching over to hard court for the run-up to the Open which begins August 29 in New York.

The 35-year-old lost just two games against Sam Querrey in the ATP first round at this old-money yachting centre on the US East coast to reach the second round.

He next faces Australian wild card Max Purcell.

But three-time Grand Slam winner Murray – his ranking back to a respectable 52nd – is working toward a higher goal – regaining a seeding at the major he won in 2012.

“It’s a big goal of mine these next few weeks,” Murray said. “I’ve been playing better the last few months.

“But if you want to have deep runs in the biggest tournaments it does help to have a seeding.”

The former No. 1 beat Queerey in a match plagued by major gusts of Atlantic ocean wind “So I’ll try my best to do that and obviously one match closer today and hoping to have a good run here.”

He previously played the tournament as a teenager in 2006, reaching the semi-finals.

“It’s amazing to be back here playing on this court again after I think 16 years.A lot has happened in that time, four kids, married and all that stuff.”
