Emma Raducanu confessed on Friday she felt sick as she travelled to last year’s US Open final, overcoming her queasiness to complete tennis history by winning a Grand Slam from a qualifying start.
While the 19-year-old Londoner is much more relaxed coming into Monday’s start at Flushing Meadows, memories of her discomfort nearly a year ago are easy to recall.
“The last memory I have before the final that morning (was that) I felt so sick in the car here. I felt so car sick.
“I blamed it on being car sick, but I was a bit nervous, too. During the whole car journey, my head was in my hands. I was like, What’s going on.”
But the nerves quickly dissipated: “As soon as I got out of the car, I just promised myself, “Look, you just fake it, do whatever you can, and it worked well that day.'”
WTA No. 11 Raducanu who begins in the opening round against French danger-woman Alize Cornet, may still be getting used to some of the attention which will likely follow her throughout her career.
Her run-up preparation comprised a quarter-final in Washington and the third round last week in Cincinnati.
“Before, I could do whatever I wanted, be left to it.Now there are a lot of people around me at all times. It’s something that just comes with what I do.
“But it’s part of the sport, part of what I do. Yeah, no complaints.”
