Another nail in the Kosmos coffin: Thiem splits from Spaniards

Dominic Thiem has pulled the plug on his ill-starred arrangement with disgraced Spanish company Kosmos just days after the firm’s grandiose Davis Cup sponsorship crashed and burned.

Spanish-run Kosmos, which had promised to re-invent the venerable Davis Cup when it cut a deal with the ITF in 2019, now barely registers on the tennis radar, with the Davis competition now facing a financial crisis.

The Barcelona outfit run by ex-footballer Gerard Piqué – in the process of divorcing singer Shakira – never achieved much for Austria’s 2020 US Open winner Thiem, who will now keep his management strictly in-house.

The No. 96 still coming back from a 2021 wrist injury, will count on brother Moritz to handle his business affairs after the Kosmos failure

“My management won’t make me a better player, my management won’t light a fire in me either,” Thiem told Austrian media. “It doesn’t matter who (manages) me.

“Kosmos did not have much luck with me. I signed and after five days I destroyed my wrist (June 2019).

“It didn’t go well for me or them. In any case, that is not important to me at the moment, what is important is that the internal fire rekindles.”

The Austrian added: “We ended the partnership with Kosmos without a dispute, which was also very important for us.”

Thiem will now shift focus back to the court, leaving for this month’s South American clay swing beginning in Buenos Aires.
