Alexander Zverev broke the spell of Daniil Medvedev by reversing a run of three losses to his rival with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 third-round win at the Cincinnati masters on Thursday.

The German 16th seed who won the 2021 edition here, ran his Cincinnati win streak to seven straight as he moved into the quarter-finals.

The match lasted for two and a half hours in blustery conditions in the Midwest.

“I had to be patient in very tough windy conditions,” Zverev said. “Medvedev doesn’t give you anything – you have to win the match yourself and I’m pleased that I did that.”

The German who won the Hamburg title last month in his hometown profitted as his opponent double-faulted to trail 5-4 in the final set.

Zverev immediately took full advantage, wrapping up victory in the next game, producing 36 winners and 49 unforced errors.

“I had to take my chances in this wind, you won’t get many from Medvedev.”
