Caroline Wozniacki’s second-round loss on Wednesday at the Australian Open ruined a perfectly good family holiday for the former world No. 1.
The 2018 tournament winner who returned last summer to tennis three and a half years after retiring, was dispatched 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 by Maria Timofeeva.
“When you have the family (husband, two kids) here you want to win even more because you want to stay longer and not have to move around,” the 33-year-old said.
“It (losing) definitely sucks and it’s disappointing. I felt this was my match to win, and I didn’t.
“I obviously sit here with a very disappointing feeling, because I feel the match kind of slid out of my hands.
“At this point, there’s nothing I can do about it, but obviously playing a Grand Slam and, you know, you want to keep winning.”
The Dane said she could not just “brush it under the carpet.”
“Losing now and losing back then (during her career), it doesn’t really change.
“As a competitor you want to win everything.”
