Swiatek took barely an hour to reach the third round, never once losing serve, winning the opening set and taking a 5-1 lead in the second on the way to victory

Two-time New York champion Naomi Osaka, who has been putting on a fashion parade of zany high-fashion outfits – today’s had the look of a silver fire-retardant blanket – during her match walk-ons, got down to tennis business with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 defeat of Katerina Siniakova.

Siniakova put up a fight in the second set, winning it even as Osaka was a point away from a 5-2 lead and a potential straight-sets win.

“Obviously the match was really difficult. I think on my end it was more, like, mentally I wanted to play perfectly,” Osaka said. “Obviously that’s not going to happen every day.

“In the third set, I just tried to do what I could do, and thankfully I was able to win.”

The Japanese added: “I wasn’t really paying attention too much in the second set, but I do think that I was ahead, and I kind of let it slip through my fingers. 

“I was trying to tell myself in the third set, keep going and keep trying to take the opportunities.”

2017 finalist Madison Keys saved five match points in fighting off Hungarian Anna Bondar for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5) win.

Keys joked about her close call afterwards:  {That was something, no stress) We all knew I had it.

American Ann Li, who has based herself in Alicante, Spain, defeated on-form Donna Vekic, serving out a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win with a concluding love game.

Austrian Anastasia Potapova needed just over two hours to defeat France’s Léolia Jeanjean  6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Tournament darling Alexandra Eala beat Oleksandra Oliynykova with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 scoreline. Amanda Anisimova put out Austrian Lilli Tagger  6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The Filipina reached the third round here for the first time after losing only eight games and has dropped only one of her last 11 matches.

The 18th-ranked Eala has stormed into prominence, bring an entire new demographic of Filipino fans from around the world into the tennis orbit as she moves from strength to strength

“I’m sure they share in that sentiment. Like Americans or like Ukrainians like Oleksandra who played so amazingly today. I think we all represent something. Yeah, I’m proud of what I represent.”
