Top 100 won’t be enough for Murray

Andy Murray continues to show signs of an upward trajectory. The still recovering former world number one beat Ugo Umbert and Vasek Pospisil in the recent ATP 250 event in Metz, reaching the quarter final.

This success followed on from his close five setter against world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open.

Recovering from his hip resurfacing, Murray has been in and out of the tour. But now, after a year of wildcards, the Brit has his eyes set on more regular competition in 2022.

After this most recent tournament, Murray’s ranking moved up to 109. However, despite the closeness of the top 100 target, Andy Murray’s goals are much loftier.

“I think I played better this week than I did in Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, for example,” he said.

“I did play a pretty good match at the US Open. But I’m not that interested in playing well and losing. I want to be winning these matches. But the consistency this week was better than it was over in the States.

“My goal is not to get in the top 100. I would want to get back in the top 10 would be more something that would motivate me in terms of a goal. Winning tournaments and getting up towards the top of the rankings is motivating to me.

“Hopefully between now and the end of the year I can play a lot of matches and try to do better than this week.”
