Swiatek strolls to Polish home title

Iga Swiatek lost a single game on Sunday as the world No. 1 took advantage of a soon-to-close WTA rules loophole to win her home 250 tournament in Warsaw.

The Pole picked up her fourth trophy of the season as she crushed German Laura Siegemund in 69 minutes after winning the first nine games.

Swiatek now owns 15 career honours, adding Warsaw to titles this season in  Doha, Stuttgart and Roland Garros; she advanced through the week without losing a set.

“It’s not easy to play in Warsaw, but I’m so happy that we could manage and do everything we could today,” the winner said.

“I wanted to put it all in and go for it. I’m pretty happy that I did.”

The world’s top women squeezed into the field of the lowest level professional event, with the WTA working on a new rule to stop Top 10 players competing   at the 250 level in the interests of fairness.

Swiatek broke five times on her way to the trophy; the match was her second of the day after finishing off a troublesome semi-final stopped by darkness on Saturday.

The top seed held on to finally defeat Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, 6-1, 7-6 (6).

But getting the job done was not straightforward, with Swiatek leading a set and 5-2 only to find herself level at 5-all before struggling to victory after wasting three match points.

She came two points away from a third set in the semi-final but finally moved through on her sixth match point.
