Swiatek finds form to reach San Diego quarters

Iga Swiatek took three sets to beat China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 yesterday to ease into the quarterfinals of the San Diego Open and move closer to her eighth title this season.

Swiatek, who nearly clinched that eighth trophy last week in the Czech Republic, found her form to eventually see off her opponent.

After a first round bye, Swiatek had the only break to took the opening set witubtxe only break before allowed the Zheng back into the match.

“Qinwen, she has a different game style because she’s playing topspin on her forehand and the ball is flying pretty high,” Swiatek said.

“But overall, the first matches of any tournament is about adjusting to the conditions we have here.”

The second set loss woke Swiatek up and after Zheng held serve to open the third, the Polish champion won the next six games to end the match in spectacular style.

Swiatek will take on Coco Gauff in the quarters after the American beat Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in a match that was delayed due to sea mist.
