Stan Wawrinka won his first match in a month on Tuesday as he shocked second seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to end the Norwegian’s run of form in Switzerland.
The Basel upset at the Swiss Indoors first round ended after 80 minutes with a loss for Ruud, who claimed summer titles on local clay in Geneva and Gstaad.
Ruud, winner of eight of nine career titles on clay, continued to struggle on hardcourt indoors.
He lost in the first round In Tokyo three weeks ago.
Wawrinka has a mixed history in Basel, going out in the first round eight times but also reaching a pair of semi-finals.
Wawrinka sent over 25 winners including nine aces, breaking Ruud once per set.
