Casper Ruud’s so-so season continued in Asia with the three-time Grand Slam finalist bundled out in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday by Fabian Marozsan.
The 82nd-ranked Hungarian outsider drew the curtain on Ruud’s time in China in a match where the Norwegian seed had to save 12 of 14 break points while going down to defeat.
The loss puts Ruud into a struggle to try and again qualify into the field of the eight-man ATP Finals in Turin – an event where he lost the final last November to Novak Djokovic
“I’m very happy to beat Casper, a top-seeded player here in Shanghai,” he winner said. .
“I played one of my best matches, I was just happy to win the first set. The second set was not easy, he started to play much better.
“And the third was also a tough one. I’m really happy to beat him.”
The winner advanced in two and three-quarter hours, his best showing at the Masters level.
Marozsan added Ruud to a Top 10 victim’s list this season headed by no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who he defeated in the Rome third round last May in a winning Masters career debut.
