Casper Ruud fell victim to rising Italian Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday with the third seed bounced from the Paris Masters third round 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The 20-year-old Musetti, who broke through for a second ATP title this season by winning Naples, had never defeated a Top 5 player.
The youngster ranked 23rd produced 37 winners as he booked a Masters 1000 quarter-final for the first time.
“I’m really happy,” the winner said. “We played a great match until the end. A lot of remarkable shots from his side.
“He was playing really well and I had to play my best tennis to beat him.
“I’m happy that all the hard work I am doing keeps improving me. I am really proud of this win.”
Musetti heads to Milan for next week’s NextGen Finals where he will play as top seed: Ruud, the June Roland Garros finalist and winner of three 2022 titles, will play at the ATP Finals in Turin starting a week from Sunday.
