Rune ready to pair with Wozniacki at Paris Games

Holger Rune and come-back-bound Caroline Wozniacki are more than ready for a possible Paris Olympic mixed doubles pairing next summer.

World No. 6 Rune re-stated his hopes that the pairing between the recent Wimbledon quarter-finalist and the former WTA No. 1 who retired in 2020 but is coming back this week in Montreal can become a reality.

“It would be really cool, I really like her as a person and a player,” he said. “It would be the perfect mix for me at the Olympics. I hope we can make it happen.”

The pair had a serious hit recently in their home of Monte Carlo, with the 20-year-old ATP standout impressed with the game of his 33-year-old compatriot.

“It was super-exciting,” he said. “She was hitting the ball well and hardly missing at all.

“I was surprised that she was playing that well. She is really determined — when she goes for something I’m sure she will do it well.”

Wozniacki is preparing in Montreal for her return to action after a retirement which lasted for only three years.

“I’ve not played a match in a long time and I realise that the first match won’t be perfect,” she said.

“I’ll do my best and fight as hard as I can. I want to play as many matches as possible and hope to peak for the US Open.”

Wozniacki added: “Preparation has been good, if tiring,” she said. “I’ve been working hard.

“I want to be ready for this week and the US Open. I’m happy to be back and playing my first event in years.”
