Holger Rune’s coaching experiment with Roger Federer mentor Severin Luthi has dissolved in a matter of weeks, with the headstrong Dane kicking the Swiss Davis Cup captain to the curb.

Rune turned in a so-so showing at the Australian Open, losing in the second round to young Frenchman Arthur Cazauz.

Luthi served on team Federer for years as coach and strategist for the Swiss icon.

News of the coaching collapse was revealed to Danish media by Rune’s Svengali-like mother and manager/coach Aneke.

Luthi was part of a  Rune squad which also includes Boris Becker, hired only last autumn only weeks before Luthi..

“From now on Holger will only have Boris and Kenneth (Carlsen),” she said.

“Tthe timing with Severin was clearly not right. It would be too few weeks for Severin to be able to cover for the continuity that Holger needs.

“With Boris and Kenneth, Holger gets the flow he wants for his development and stability. From now on, the majority of all the big tournaments will be with both coaches,”

The quiet, private Luthi, 40,  had no comment when contacted by Swiss media.
