Dominic Thiem was spooked by a last-minute rain interruption as the Austrian’s comeback to form stalled at home with a quarter-final loss on Thursday on the clay of Kitzbuehel.
The one-time ATP No. 3 who won the US Open two years ago but suffered a serious wrist injury in June of last season, lost to German Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
The contest was halted briefly last in the final set, with both players taken off court, only to return as Hanfmann finished off the win into a semi-final place at this ski resort venue.
Thiem had won his last six matches at Kitz and stood 12-1 here dating to a 2019 title performance.
It is the 30-year-old’s fourth ATP Tour semi-final and his second at the Austrian ATP 250.
The weather moved by at 5-4 in the third set as Thiem was serving to stay in the match.
Upon the return, Hanfmann spoiled the home scenario after two and a half hours on court at the event where the No. 140 reached the final in 2020.
