Peng protest planned for Women’s singles final

Human rights campaigners and tennis fans are planning a protest over the safety of missing Chinese player Peng Shuai during the Australian Open women’s final on Saturday.

The protest is believed to include fans begin given free t-shirts to wear as the search for answers regarding the Chinese tennis player’s safety continues.

Australian activist Drew Pavlou, who took to Twitter to post clips of Australian Open security ordering spectators to remove ‘Free Peng Shuai’ shirts is behind the protest.

He has set set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to print t-shirts with ‘Where is Peng Shuai’? On the back.

“Donate now to make it really really hard for Aus Open security to silence us,” he tweeted on Monday.

The page has now raised over $13,000 as Pavlou has pledged to “raise as much noise and hell about it as possible”.

“Sadly Tennis Australia has not taken such a firm stance in favour of human rights and basic standards of justice,” his page states.

“In fact, Tennis Australia called police on human rights activists at the 2022 Australian Open for simply wearing shirts asking the same question Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and fans the world over have asked: ‘Where is Peng Shuai?’

“Every cent raised here on GoFundMe will go towards the printing of these shirts. We will account for every single dollar spent with receipts.”
