Pain-in-the-neck Stan advances in Gstaad

Stan Wawrinka advanced to the Gstaad Open second round on Tuesday 6-3, 3-1 as Spanish opponent Roberto Carballes Baeña quit their match with neck pain.

The veteran Swiss with three Grand Slam titles is competing on the home alpine clay for the first time in a decade.

The 38-year-old has played the event 10 times previously, with a 2004 final against Gaston Gaudio his highlight performance.

After dispatching the No. 60. Wawrinka will next face another Spaniard in 110th-ranked Jaume Munar in this VIP alpine village..

Carballes Baeña showed signs of his injury from the start, finally finding a winner after 10 minutes of play.

The shot counted for little as the Swiss swept the opening set in 21 minutes and needed to play only four more games before his opponent gave up as he lost the first 13 points of the contest.

Wawrinka was fresh from Wimbledon and a third-round defeat against Novak Djokovic
