No further Covid cases confirmed

An Australian State MP has confirmed there have been no more COVID-19 cases linked to the Australian Open.

Victorian State Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said two of the three cases detected were non-players – one a coach and the other an airline crew member.

Ms D’Ambrosio said it was “not ideal” that almost 50 players were locked in tight quarantine and could not leave their hotel rooms.

“We know that COVID knows no bounds and no boundaries, whether you’re a first class tennis player or a spectator in the audience,” she said.

The Minister also said it was important that players and staff must adhere to Tennis Australia’s quarantine rules.

“We need to keep to the clear health advice. It’s far from ideal but COVID is not ideal. Rules are rules, no matter who you are,” she said.

Ms D’Ambrosio said efforts were being made to provide players isolating in their rooms with gym equipment.

2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu’s coach Sylvain Bruneau confirmed he was one of the positive cases and said he was “saddened and sorry” by the result.
