Murray splits with Lendl for the third time

Andy Murray has parted company with coach Ivan Lendl for the third time

The pair have split by mutual agreement as the Scot, who won three major titles together, prepares for the 2024 season.

36 year old Murray said “Ivan has been by my side at the biggest moments in my career and I can’t thank him enough for all that he’s helped me achieve,”

“He’s a unique character, who understands what it takes to win and I’ve learnt an awful lot over the years from him.”

Murray managed to return to the highest level after hip resurfacing surgery in 2019 which many feared would end his career, but the triple Grand slam winner continues to be frustrated that he has been unable to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam since.

The Scot won two Wimbledon titles, the 2012 US Open and two Olympic gold medals under Lendl’s guidance.

Murray  is part of Britain’s squad for the Davis Cup Finals later this month, and is ranked 42nd in the world. His ATP Tour season over for the year.

His season ended with a disappointing loss against Alex de Minaur in the Paris Masters first round having been 5-2 up in the final set, only to go down 7-5.

Murray was so downcast at that loss, some observers thought he might  call it a day.

Brits Mark Hilton and Jonny O’Mara  have been working with Murray alongside Lendl this season and  will share coaching duties moving forward.

Lendl added.  “I will look back with some great memories of the time Andy and I worked together,”

“He’s as hard a worker as there is and the sport is better because of him. I wish him only the best in the years to come.”
