Andy Murray made a return to competitive tennis in Italy yesterday with a three-set victory over Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in a Challenger Tour event.

The former world No.1 Scot should have been at the Australian Open but he was not allowed to travel after testing positive for COVID-19.

So his return began at the Biella Challenger Indoor in northern Italy where he saw off the 25-year-old Marterer 6-7 6-2 6-3 in just over two hours.

The first set went with serve and Murray then lost a tie-break after three errors.

The second went all his way as he went in front at 2-1 and from there never looked back.
