Murray drops 690 places in world rankings

Former No.1 has only played three matches in past year

Missing out on two grand sam events has proved costly for former British No.1 Andy Murray, who has now dropped to No. 23 in the British rankings.

Murray is now ranked 839 in the world rankings after his injury problems, falling 690 places in Monday’s rankings. The 31-year-old had hip surgery in January after being out of action since last year’s Wimbledon. He has only played three matches since then.

Murray is due to return to action at the Citi Open, which starts in Washington on 30 July.

Kyle Edmund is now the top ranking Brit in 16th spot. Novak Djokovic’s fourth Wimbledon win has propelled him back into there rankings.

Djokovic beat Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to win his fourth Wimbledon men’s singles crown on Sunday, boosting his ranking 11 places.

Anderson, 32, moved up three places to fifth in the rankings after his final appearance.

Rafael Nadal remains top of the table and has widened there gap over No.2 Federer in the points rankings with 9310 to Federer’s 7080.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams has returned to the world’s top 30 after reaching the Wimbledon final. The American, 36, has risen 153 places to 28th despite losing to Angelique Kerber in only her fourth tournament since giving birth 10 months ago.
