Frenchman Adrian Mannarino smashed his own racket into his forehead drawing blood during the second set of the United Cup  match in Sydney against  Italy’s Lorezno Sonego.

Mannarino had won the first set but with Sonego 30-0 up and looking to break serve in the second, when the 35-year-old shocked the crowd with a self-induced injury.

The trainer called onto the court, leading to a  controversial medical timeout for France in the team event.

A similar incident occurred at the 2008 Miami Open played at Key Biscayne when Mikhail Youzhny  playing  Nicolas Almagro suffered a  self-inflicted head  injury drawing blood on court.
