Daniil Medvedev got off to a losing start on grass Thursday, with the top seed at the ATP event in the Netherlands falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
Medvedev’s clay season ended last month in the Roland Garros first round and his grass start was not much better.
The former US Open champion lost in two hours as his opponent earned a second defeat of a Top 10 player on grass.
Mannarino beat then-No. 5 Dominic Thiem in Mallorca two years ago, with the Austrian retiring after seven games with the wrist problem which started his injury spiral down the rankings.
French spoiler Mannarino won the title here four years ago and lost to Medvedev at the venue in the 2022 semi-finals.
