Kyrgios back on Lleyton’s good list with Davis invite

Last weekend’s Wimbledon final from Nick Kyrgios has made an impression on Lleyton Hewitt , with the Australian Davis Cup captain issuing a playing invitation to the controversial character.

Hewitt, the 2002 Wimbledon winner, was inducted this weekend into the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The captain who has had longtime mixed feelings about sometimes-tennis outlaw Kyrgios is now fully onside with the 27-year-old.

Kyrgios has an 11-5 record in Davis singles, making his debut as a teenager in 2013.

Now as a grand Slam finalist and doubles champion at the Australian open this season, Kyrgios is being head-hunted like never before.

“We’d absolutely love to have him playing for us,” Hewitt told Reuters.

“We’re a much stronger side if he’s available and can play for us, and he’s an option for singles and doubles matches, which is important in this format.”

Australia’s next Davis job will be a Group C preliminary stage alongside France, Germany and Belgium September 13-18 in Hamburg.

Kyrgios, who has vowed to travel even less than his sparse previous schedule, could make that date if he plays the Laver Cup in London scheduled a week later.
