Estonian Anett Kontaveit continued her good form, beating defending champion Bianca Andreescu 7-6(5) 6-3 at Indian Wells.
Kontaveit came back from 3-1 down in the second set to give Andreescu her first match loss at Indian Wells and extend her winning streak to eight matches.
She will face Brazilian lucky loser Beatriz Haddad Maia, who beat No.1 seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets.
Angelique Kerber also made out through, beating Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, but fellow Russian Anna Kalinskaya came from behind to beat Swiss Viktoria Golubic 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
