It’s all in the mind for record-setter Djokovic

Novak Djokovic relies heavily in his extraordinary mental strength, with the new French Open champion crediting a strong head for carrying him to a record 23rd Grand Slam singles title.

The Serb returned to the No. 1 ranking a month after Carlos Alcaraz took it over and will skip grass preparation events and hit Wimbledon cold when play begins in three weeks.

Djokovic’s straight-set win over Casper Ruud in the weekend Roland Garros final was an exercise in excellence for the 36-year-old.

“I’m the best on the court because it’s the only state of mind or spirit that can lead to historical results and this trophy,” he said, adding that labelling himself the GOAT just because he has a few more titles than Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would be disrespectful.

“I don’t want to enter in these discussions. I’m writing my own history.

“Each great champion of his own generation has left a huge mark, a legacy, and paved the way for us to be able to play this sport in such a great stage worldwide.

“I leave those discussions of who is the greatest to someone else. I have huge faith and confidence and belief in myself and everything that I am and what I’m of doing.

“This trophy obviously is another confirmation of the quality of tennis that I’m still able to produce.”
