Hurkacz hot streak halted by PCB in Canada

Pablo Carreno Busta called a halt to the title-winning ways of Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory in the ATP Montreal Masters.

The third Spaniard to triumph in Canada handed his Polish opponent his first defeat in a final after Hurkacz had won the first five of his career.

PCB would not be stopped as he mounted his comeback in his first-ever title match at the Masters level.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a Masters 1000 winner,” the No.23 who will rise to 14th on Monday said. “It’s the best title of my career for sure.”

The victory marked a turnaround of sorts for the Spaniard. “It’s not my best season this year. I lost some matches that probably other seasons I would not have lost.

“But I just tried to continue believing in my team, in myself and in my game,”

he added after success in one and three-quarter hours.

The Spanish challenger absorbed 18 aces from the Hurkacz racquet to become the first champion in Canada ranked outside the Top 20 since number 43 Andrei Pavel in 2001 at Montreal.

“But I just tried to continue believing in my team, in myself and in my game.”

Two breaks in the final set sealed the win for Carreno Busta, who wrapped up his seventh ATP title on his first match point.

“Pablo was playing really, really well throughout the whole match,” Hurkacz said. “It just was tough to play against him.

“Maybe I wasn’t serving as good as I can. But definitely Pablo deserved to win today.”

He added: “It’s definitely a good week, (I made) a lot of improvements.

“I’ll learn a lot from that week and move on to the next one.”
