Britain’s Katie Boulter beat Marta Kostyuk 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to win the San Diego Open on Sunday, with Australian boyfriend Alex de Minaur cheering her on from the stands.

It was Boulter’s first WTA 500 title, after De Minaur had flown into California from his success 24 hours earlier winning the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

Boulter, ranked 49, has to overcome a first set loss to beat her Ukrainian opponent as she became the lowest-ranked player to win a WTA 500 title since 2021.

The win could see her jump 20 places in the WTA rankings.

“I want to say a special thank you to my boyfriend,” Boulter said at the post-match presentation.

“He finished last night at midnight and he got a 4.15am taxi and a six o’clock flight to be here today, so I do appreciate it.”

“I can’t stop smiling,” Boulter added. “I’ve been wanting this my whole career and now I’ve got to move my goalposts and keep it going.”
