Canada hopes took a blow on Tuesday as national No. 2 Denis Shapovalov withdrew from next week’s Toronto Masters with a long-running knee injury.

The world No. 22 who announced himself to the world six years ago with a defeat of Rafael Nadal as a teenaged wild card, has suffered with the knee problems for weeks.

Shapovalov last competed nearly a month ago at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round.

The popular local will still front up for an opening ceremony prior to the night session next Monday which will honour Davis Cup winners Canada.

Shapovalov achieved his best Canadian result with a 2017 semi-final and lost in the opening round a year ago.
